What is the Difference between Series and Parallel Connection of Batteries?

Batteries are some of the most mysterious objects in this world. They can be in various sizes and has different components, but they all have the same objective. That objective is no other than to give power to the devices we want to turn on. There are times, however, when more than one battery is needed, and professionals end up connecting the batteries in series or in parallel. For them, such an occurrence might be normal. But for us, it might be a little bit hard to understand. Don’t worry, since we will try our best to explain the difference between series and parallel connection of batteries.

How do you connect batteries in series?

Let’s start with the main aim of connecting both in series and parallel. Connecting in both series and parallel might have the different result, but the aim is the same, which is to increase something of the batteries. In this case, they are trying to increase the voltage or amp-hour capacity. Sometimes there are even cases where you end up increasing both for the purpose of more power and energy.

Connecting the batteries is pretty easy. You just have to connect the positive side of one battery to the negative side of the other one by using jumper wire.

The tricky part, however, is charging the batteries. Since you’re increasing the voltage to the amount you desire but not the Ah, you need to make sure that you have a charger that has the same amount of voltage as the new voltage ready. If you don’t want to go through such a hassle, you can opt by charging the batteries individually with a multi-bank charger

Batteries in Parallel

If connecting batteries in series is done to increase the voltage, then connecting batteries in parallel is to increase the Ah of the batteries. You can do so by connecting the two sides of the batteries that have the same value using jumping wires. When you connect batteries in parallel, you connect the positive sides of the batteries together, then connect the negative sides also.

Before connecting, you need to make sure that you’ve had the proper materials when connecting. If you desire an extremely high voltage, you need to make sure that the wires are safe enough to be used. Make sure that you use thick wires if you are planning to get high voltage.

If you connect the batteries in parallel properly, you will soon see that the Ah of the batteries increase but not the voltage. If the voltage increases, then you’re doing it wrong. If you’ve increased the voltage though, then congratulations! You have a set of batteries that are ready to increase the performance of your device.

How do you connect batteries both in series and parallel?

Unlike what people thought, you can actually connect batteries both in series and parallel. When you do so, you’re increasing both the voltage and the Ah of the batteries. To do this, you will need at least 4 batteries and at least 7 jumper wires.

Here are the steps to connect the batteries both in series and parallel at the same time:

1.Connect the two batteries in series, meaning connect the positive side to the positive side only, and the same for negative sides.

2.Do the same step for the other pair of batteries.

3.Once you’re done, connect the two sets by connecting one of the positive sides of the battery pair to the negative side of the other battery pair.

If you do it correctly, you’ll find the voltage and the Ah increase in no time.

It should be noted that you can do this using as many batteries as you want. However, you need to make sure that you won’t make a tangled mess that will end up giving you the extra hassle.

One of the ways to make sure you won’t make a mess is by drawing a diagram of the batteries. By doing this, you’ll be able to keep track of which connector is connecting to which. If you can’t handle it though, it is best to let someone who understands such things (or a professional) to handle the connections. It’s better to be safe than to be sorry, after all.

Some people think it’s better to connect batteries in parallel. In truth, connecting batteries in parallel or series does not matter.
