The demand of lithium batteries for off grid solar system is increasing day by day, while assessing your solar battery choices, there are other requirements you can use, such as how long the solar battery can last or how much power it will produce.
In this article, we are going to tell you all the parameters that can use to compare your home energy storage choices, as well as the various solar battery type which will be helpful in choosing best battery for off grid solar.
What is the best battery for off grid solar?
Batteries that are usually used in home energy storage are made from one of three chemical compositions and have features unique to them:
lead acid
lithium ion
saltwater
1-Lithium ion batteries:
Lithium ion batteries are in most cases the best choice for a solar panel device, though certain types of batteries might be more efficient. Lithium ion Most modern technologies for home energy storage, such as the, use some sort of chemical composition of lithium ion. Lithium ion batteries are lighter than lead acid batteries, and are more lightweight. Similar to lead acid batteries they do have a higher DoD and longer life span. Lithium ion batteries, however, are more costly than their counterparts on lead acid.
Lithium battery banks appear to be just 50-60 percent of the size of a comparable lead acid bank because of greater performance and deeper discharge capacity! The lithium batteries we use are designed for solar off-grid and use a special lithium chemistry called Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LiFePO4, commonly referred to as "LFP").
This form of lithium battery is equipped with stable chemistry and sophisticated electronic safety features to provide a long service life (over 10 years).
2-Lead acid batteries:
Lead acid batteries are a proven technology which has been used for decades in off-grid power systems. While they have a fairly short life and lower DoD than other forms of batteries, they are still one of the least expensive choices in the home energy storage field currently in the market. Lead acid can be a good choice for homeowners who want to go off the grid and need to add loads of energy storage.
Lead acid batteries are reactive and must be completely recharged regularly, where Lithium batteries will remain at a partial charge without any adverse impact. Lead acid batteries do have a more restricted capacity and usually about 50 percent of them are discharged.
3-Saltwater batteries:
A recent innovation in the home energy storage industry is the saltwater battery. Unlike other options for home energy storage, saltwater batteries do not contain heavy metals but rather they rely on saltwater electrolytes. While batteries that use heavy metals, including lead acid and lithium ion batteries need to be disposed of using special methods, whereas, a battery from saltwater is easily recycled. It's one of the latest technologies which is why most batteries of saltwater are still untested and need to be tested.
How long do lithium batteries for off grid solar system last?
The general range for useful lifetime of a solar battery is between 5 and 15 years. If you are building a solar battery today, you probably need to upgrade it at least once to suit your PV system's lifetime of 25 to 30 years
There are two ways to address the question and the first is to decide how long your home can be powered by a solar battery. For certain instances, where your solar panels do not generate electricity, a fully charged battery will power your home overnight. You'll need to learn a few factors to make a more precise estimate, including how much electricity your household uses in a given day, what the efficiency and power rating is for your solar panel, and whether or not you're connected to the electric grid.
For a simple example, it is necessary to calculate the size of a battery required to deliver a suitable solar plus storage solution with U.S. national average data which is called Power Data Management.
The reason is actually more complicated than that. During the day you can also produce power with your solar panel system which will provide good power during peak sunlight hours for some 6-7 hours of the day. At the other hand, most batteries are unable to operate at full capacity and typically plateau at a depth of discharge ( DoD ) of 90%. As a consequence, your 10 kWh battery currently has 9 kWh of usable power.
Eventually, if you pair your battery with a solar PV system, one or two batteries will provide enough power during the night when your panels don't perform. Without a renewable energy solution, however, you would need 3 or more batteries to power your entire home for 24 hours.
Additionally, if you are building home energy storage to detach from the electric grid, you can provide backup power for a few days to compensate for days when you might have rainy weather. However, just as the lifetime of solar panels has increased dramatically in the last decade, solar batteries are expected to follow suit as the energy storage solutions market expands.
How much are lithium batteries for off grid solar system
Due to the high efficiency (95 to 98 per cent), compact size, lightweight and scalability of lithium battery systems, it has become increasingly common in the market of off grid solar system batteries. This versatile configuration makes it possible to incorporate additional capacity at a larger stage which is a great benefit for both installers and customers alike.
The cost of off grid solar system batteries is usually high. The cost of the batteries depends on the lifespan, the depth of discharge and the material that has been used in order to make the battery. The summary of the article regarding lifespan and depth of discharge has been shown in figure 1. According to it, lithium batteries cost as compare to lead acid and saltwater battery is much higher due to its greater life span.
